MORE ABOUT ESSENTIAL OILS
Throughout history, our ancestors used this "life force"
of plants to treat a variety of ailments. Today, research has
shown some of these complex oils to be effective anti-viral and
bacterial adaptogens that safely self-regulate within the body.
As a result, essential oils are increasingly used in a wide range
of institutional settings such as hospitals to combat superbugs
and corporations to effect mood enhancement in the workplace.
Where Essential Oils Come From…
Essential oils are stored in special cells, ducts or glandular
hairs that are distributed among the roots, leaves, bark, stems
and flowers of the plant. Their main job is to protect the plant
from insects, herbivores, bacteria, molds, fungi and other microorganisms.
They are molecularly complex, often comprised of hundreds of constituents.
Therapeutic grade essential oils are extracted from plants using
pure distillation processes. The lower the heat and the longer
the process, the better the quality of oil produced.
How Essential Oils Work…
Contrary to what the name suggests, pure essential oils are actually
watery and very volatile. In the case of massage, a few drops
of the powerfully concentrated substance is added to carrier oils
such as grapeseed or almond. For inhalation treatment, drops are
added to hot water, where they quickly vaporize, or may be inhaled
from a cloth.
The oils are rapidly absorbed through the skin or through inhalation
due to their molecular structure, and are equally quick to distribute
throughout your system. Often, a scent can be detected on your
breath immediately after use.
Once the oil is in your system (in about a second!), the nerves
fire and send messages to the limbic area of the brain, which
is area that governs emotions. The pituitary gland is also stimulated,
which results in chemical messages being sent via the blood stream
to specific glands and organs.
